Inside Out: What’s the Right Approach to Change? | MIT Center for Civic Media

Monday, June 24, 2013 - 9:10am

Newsrooms are making room for outsiders, as social media becomes an input into reporting and a pathway to reach new audiences. Outsiders are changing civics as well, when we see the Occupy movement working with FEMA to provide hurricane relief. But are we more effective seeking change with the perspective of the outsider or with the knowledge of the insider? Our opening session features three remarkable speakers who have worked as insiders and outsiders: a congressman who's been both a fierce critic of the Obama administration and a partner with Democratic legislators; a parlimentarian and activist who's transformed Icelandic politics, and the former head of an insurgent encyclopedia that's become one of the internet's most influential communities.
