Baby Votes: Couple to name their newborn using Selectricity

Jackie and Helen, two MIT graduate students, are making the bassinet safe for democracy: They have decided to name their baby through Selectricity, Mako & Co.'s online voting system. The baby is completely adorable (The tattoo is just a simulation. Perhaps something to consider?). Helen is well, and there was an auspicious first snow last night.

Congratulations to the very happy parents!

The baby looks really cute! Selectricity will have to carry the tag throughout his life time. I really pity that kid.

I'm not sure that it's altogether fair giving a kid a name which other kids will constantly pester them about. I think the choice should be made by the parents alone and not thrown open to the world. Just a thought! Hope parenthood is going well for the delighted parents and that they are getting some sleep!

Hi all

I see there have been no more comments or replies to my last post but anyway, here's another post re. baby names. Have you all heard of Jamie Oliver, the British cook? Well he and his wife have just named their baby girl Petal Blossom Rainbow!!! I mean, come on. Is that not a bit unfair on the poor child once she reaches school age. Can you imagine the stick she might receive?

What does anyone else think of these names?

There are thousands possible name suggestions for the child, I can't make a choice, I find it weird because so far I thought about names for my kids, I haven't tried picking a name for a kid other than mine. I could suggest a dictionary with meaning of names at most, choosing the right name is a big deal because the kid will have it his entire life.

Awesome idea!!!

I just think it`s weird to use a voting system for something so significant. I named all 3 of my kids with family names because of their meaning to my family. I hope this baby ended up with something special!

Awesome idea!!!

Ha! That's awesome. My best friends just named their baby Henry Ajax Knoechel. They were going to go with Ajax the whole time after the Greek warrior, but were pressured by parents to make it a middle name. Selectricity would have been the way to go!

I like the idea of choosing a child's name based on the meaning rather than just going with what's popular at the time. I think it shows a depth to the parents' relationship with their newborn, the fact that they have chosen the name because of a special meaning. This no doubt will make the child feel very special when they are old enough to understand.

I totally agree with the comments above in regards to the voting of your childs name. Wht would you leave it up to other people to decide on something that your child will have for the rest of their life. Amazing.

Cute baby, apart from this I think Selectricity has a great future ahead with the goals they've. It will soon thrive the industry and we may no longer have to go through the polling stations. I didn't know about Selectricity before this post and had to read on the above link you gave about it. I am impressed by this voting system.

I am a huge fan of allthebabynames.com. It is a great site to help you choose a name for your new baby.

I really can't imagine choosing the name for my baby boy or baby girlthrough a vote - it really doesn't respect the individuality of the baby and how their name will be with them the rest of their life. Just my .02

btw...I went and looked at Selectricity, and it appears to be down - what is the status?

Why would anyone name someone like that? I have a better idea. Take a Star of David, name each corner with a name, and spin it. The one pointing North when it stops spinning will be the name that you choose.

I am also having a baby here in about 6 months and thats one of the challenges we are facing right now,l wat to name the little rugrat. LOL, we change our minds everyday!

I'm not sure I could leave something as special as a child's name to a polling system. I recently had our fourth child and we named her Amanda after a family member. A matter of fact, all of our children's names were picked from family members. I guess we were just too old fashion about that. I do have to give it to them though, it took a lot of guts to leave their child's name up to a polling system.
