Neighborhood Media Centers

Our friend Thomas Lowenhaupt of Connecting.nyc Inc. writes:
With the arrival of the .nyc TLD (like .com and .org but just for New York City), we'll will soon have the capacity to create neighborhood media centers such as astoria.nyc, brooklyn-heights.nyc, clinton.nyc, greenwich-village, harlem.nyc, etc.
Come hear about this new development that promises to strengthen city neighborhoods. Join us in imagining ways these sites can help neighbors locate and talk to one another about the problems and opportunities that affect them. Help decide who will operate them, the sites' content requirements and collaboration tools, and the appropriate oversight and accountability.
The event is sponsored by Connecting.nyc Inc., the NYS not-for-profit created to guide the .nyc TLD's acquisition and development.

New TLD's
I don't think most of the new TLD's will not end up being popular. I bought some .cc's when they first came out and it was a flop :-(

I agree with you. I love .com because people tend to remember it. It is easy to make the branding.
But very difficult to find good names.

It's not really depends on the TLD. No matter what domain name or TLD you choose, there are no real shortcuts to inflexible organic rankings.

tlds come and go. That being said there is a growing need for new tld's.
Almost all the one or two word combinataions are taken in the early tld's and as long as there is demand, supply will be created.
People Common Knowledge
Thanks for the info. Related to connecting.nyc this is my first time in hearing the cctld. People tend to stick with .com or for this case .org Though that coming from a user of the .ws I can't say much.

Domain Name
It's a good initiative to have new extensions but I agree with most that the .com extension is by far the most popular. With most names snapped up it bares the heavy price on the more sought after names. I think in the next few years the cost will still be on the rise,but more creativity will flourish in bringing out distinctive names.What do you think?

I agree, finding a good domain name is getting to be a very hard task - so I also welcome this idea.
Sounds like a good idea
This would be great for large cities and small cities alike. Can be used to keep up to date on your locale and hot topics in your areas. I like this idea for sure! I'd like to run my own .nyc blog just for the heck of it... maybe a blog like usual.

Usually these TLD are categorized on service basis. I think this media center case is not piratically in real world.

i think .nyc is better for New York city related only,
no if you want a build non nyc targetted audience / visitor.

It's not in function yet so I think it's still in process or no one registered any domains yet? I think this is a fascinating idea if this domain is into the business. We already have TLDs for countries and if we get domains for major cities as well, it may just give the local feeling. For me I think it's a great start but it should be managed rightly otherwise it'll trouble a lot of users. But a positive start in terms of recognizing major cities and having a seperate TLD for them will help improve their business a lot especially those who are new in the field.

Great idea
I think that these TLD's can become really popular since good .com and .org's are getting increasingly difficult to find. Except companies will probably be pissed for having to buy so many different TLD's in order to cover their trademarks.
City TLD
What a great idea. I'd love to see this in Australia. I have a client that specialises in Sydney Harbour cruises. His TLD is .com.au . How much better it would look if it were .syd - don't you think?
www.flagshipcruises.com.au would become www.flagshipcruises.syd - I like it!
