NSFW: After Fort Hood, another example of how ‘citizen journalists’ can’t handle the truth

November 11, 2009 - 9:55pm
this article seems misguided to me. when journalists talk with witnesses or comment on existing sources, you don't blame the sources if their inaccurate. nothing changes now that those sources are talking directly as well. the press must continue the same vetting, scrutiny, and synthesis now that those sources are communicating in a different way, while audiences must learn to do a bit of it themselves, seeing the sources the way journalists do and not simply as journalists themselves. (can also think about something like man on the street -- press' job to contextualize) if issue is instead privacy, yeah this is an issue -- but a separate one from citizen journalism. and if it's about these people not doing something more constructive, i mean -- they're not doctors, i don't know exactly what they could do, and all things being equal, reporting would seem more constructive to me than doing nothing at all. no?
